Working at Heights Certificate: How Long Does It Last?

Technically, working at heights training has no legislated expiry date in Australia. In practice, most construction sites will not let you on without a certificate less than 2 years old.

NextCert Editorial · Published 7 April 2026

This is one of the most common questions we get: how long does a working at heights certificate last? The answer depends on whether you're asking about the legal position or the practical reality on construction sites.

The Legal Position: No Legislated Expiry

In Australia, there is no legislated expiry date for the RIIWHS204E (Work Safely at Heights) Statement of Attainment. Technically, the qualification is valid indefinitely once issued. This is different from first aid (3-year renewal) or the HRWL (5-year renewal), which have defined expiry periods.

The Practical Reality: 2-Year Refresher

Despite the lack of a legislated expiry, the construction industry has adopted a standard of requiring working at heights training to be no more than 2 years old. This is driven by principal contractors, site safety plans, and industry best practice — not by legislation directly.

If your working at heights certificate is more than 2 years old, you are likely to be refused entry to most construction sites in NSW — even though the certificate is technically still 'valid.'

Why the 2-Year Standard?

  • Falls from height are the leading cause of workplace death in Australian construction
  • Safe Work Australia and state regulators recommend regular refresher training
  • Principal contractors set their own site access requirements, and most use the 2-year standard
  • Insurance and liability requirements often specify current training for elevated work

Who Enforces the 2-Year Requirement?

The requirement is typically enforced at the site level. When you arrive for induction on a construction site, the principal contractor's safety team checks your tickets. If your working at heights certificate is older than 2 years, you'll be asked to redo the course before starting work.

Some employers also set their own internal policies that are stricter than the 2-year standard. Always check with your employer or the site manager before assuming your existing certificate is current enough.

What Does a Refresher Involve?

A refresher is typically the same full-day RIIWHS204E course. Unlike some qualifications where a refresher is shorter, working at heights generally requires you to redo the complete course. This includes theory, harness fitting, and practical assessment.
