Certificate IV (AQF Level 4)
A Certificate IV is a supervisory-level qualification. It develops the skills to work independently, coordinate tasks, and provide guidance to others in a team. Most Certificate IVs take 6–12 months to complete. They're the right entry point if you're moving from an operational role into a team leader or coordinator position. Examples include the Certificate IV in Leadership and Management (BSB40520) and Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419).
Diploma (AQF Level 5)
A Diploma is a management-level qualification. It builds the capability to lead teams, manage budgets, drive operational outcomes, and make sound business decisions. Diplomas typically take 12 months online and are the most common qualification for people moving into or consolidating a management role. If you're a team leader ready for a management title, a Diploma is usually the right next step.
Advanced Diploma (AQF Level 6)
An Advanced Diploma develops senior management and strategic capability. It's designed for people already in management who want to qualify for general management, executive, or director-level roles. Advanced Diplomas take 12–18 months and are less common than Diplomas — which means employers treat them as a genuine differentiator.
Choosing the right level
The fastest way to choose: look at the job ads for the roles you want to move into, and see what qualifications they ask for. Most management roles (Team Leader, Operations Manager, WHS Manager, HR Manager) ask for a Diploma. Senior or strategic roles (General Manager, Head of, Director) often ask for an Advanced Diploma or degree. If you're already in the role and just want the formal qualification, check whether RPL is available — it may let you skip a level based on your existing experience.
Can you skip levels?
Yes. There's no mandatory sequencing — you don't have to complete a Certificate IV before enrolling in a Diploma. If your experience level matches the Diploma, you can enrol directly. Similarly, you can move from a Diploma straight to an Advanced Diploma without doing a Certificate IV. RPL makes this even more flexible — an RTO may assess your experience and qualify you at a higher level than you'd expect.
