WHS Officer Salary in Australia: What to Expect at Every Career Level

Work Health and Safety is one of Australia's most stable and in-demand professional disciplines. Demand is structurally driven by legislation — every employer has WHS obligations — which means career opportunities exist regardless of economic cycles. Salaries reflect this demand, with experienced WHS professionals earning well above the national average professional salary.

Entry level: WHS Officer / Safety Officer

Entry-level WHS officers typically earn $65,000–$85,000 per year. At this level you're conducting inspections, supporting risk assessments, managing incident records, and supporting audit processes. The Certificate IV in Work Health and Safety (BSB41419) is the standard entry-level credential.

Mid level: WHS Advisor / Safety Advisor

WHS Advisors typically earn $80,000–$110,000. At this level you're designing and implementing WHS management systems, conducting independent risk assessments, managing incident investigations, and advising management. The Diploma of Work Health and Safety (BSB51319) is the standard qualification at this level.

Senior level: WHS Manager

WHS Managers earn $95,000–$155,000 depending on sector, organisation size, and scope. At this level you're setting safety strategy, leading the safety team, managing regulatory relationships, and advising executive leadership. The Advanced Diploma of Work Health and Safety (BSB60619) or equivalent experience is typical at this level.

National/head of safety roles

National Safety Managers and Heads of Safety at large organisations earn $140,000–$200,000+. At this level you're accountable for safety performance across multiple sites or a national operation, reporting to the board or executive team.

Which industries pay the most?

IndustryTypical WHS Manager Salary
Mining and Resources$130,000–$200,000
Construction$105,000–$160,000
Government$95,000–$140,000
Healthcare$90,000–$130,000
Manufacturing$95,000–$135,000
Retail / Services$85,000–$115,000

What drives salary premium in WHS?

The biggest salary differentiators in WHS are: industry (mining/construction pay more than retail/services); qualification level (Advanced Diploma holders earn more than Diploma holders); specialist skills (psychosocial safety, ISO 45001, incident investigation); and experience with regulatory engagement (SafeWork investigations, coronial processes). Each of these is learnable and credential-able.
