How to Become a Construction Manager in Australia
What does a Construction Manager do?
Construction managers oversee commercial and residential building projects from planning through to practical completion, coordinating subcontractors, budgets, schedules, and site safety. They are responsible for ensuring projects are delivered on time, on budget, and in compliance with building codes and WHS legislation. Most states and territories require construction managers operating as principal contractors to hold a builder's licence, which typically requires a formal qualification plus demonstrated experience. The role spans residential, commercial, civil, and fit-out sectors across Australia's large and active construction industry.
Key responsibilities
- Plan and schedule construction projects from pre-contract through to handover
- Manage subcontractors, consultants, and site personnel
